Born in a house constantly filled with nieces, nephews, and cousins I have had no Choice other than becoming fond of children. My love for kids must have started when I began playing with dolls. I would go nowhere without mine; feed, clothe, and pamper her. My mother tried other toys to try and pry me from my doll but there was no separating the two of us.
Throughout my life, the love I have for kids has followed me. I attended the American School in Surrey from the age of thirteen. It was then part of our curriculum to participate in community service. Some would take care of the elderly, clean the parks, volunteer in our school kitchen but I chose to help out in the fourth grade classroom three times a week. Every term we would also have to pick a school trip to attend and as my peers chose to go to Ibiza, Monaco, Greece, I opted to go to Russia where we would spend the week at an orphanage.
On holidays in Nigeria my mom showed us the importance of giving back. We would spend some days during the break visiting orphanages and even once went to a children's hospice. Here I learnt one of the key lessons that I use in my everyday endeavors, “You do not get to choose the family or life you are born into, it is a privilege not a right, so be grateful each day”.
In college, I continued to find a way I could gain more experience in the field of working with kids. Although I spent my weeks in the George Washington University library with my head buried in Economic and Political Science books, I spent my weekends volunteering for jumpstart, a national organization specializing in helping kids from low income neighborhoods with development, language, and social skills.
During the week I would volunteer at the Red Cross branch located on my campus. All in all I have a give back spirit. I am fun to be with but at the same time responsible. I have been blessed in my life to have had the opportunity to learn whilst mixing with different environments, cultures, and people. I have an undeniable love for kids, their curiosity, innocence, and willingness to learn. I would love the chance to share some of my wisdom with your kids.
